Rungs

For the rungs, we used 1x4s because we felt that 1x4s would be a little stronger than 1x2s. We measured (and kind of guessed) as to how long and where to mount the rungs on the legs. The legs on the narrow end of the marimba turned out great; when they were collaped, they fit right around the frame. But we weren't so lucky with the legs on the wide end of the marimba; they could collapse around the frame but not around both the frame and the other set of legs -- the rung should have been a little longer to splay the legs apart more. This would have let the legs collapse around both the frame and other set of legs.

If we had to do it all over, I think we'd try a different approach. We would attach the legs to the frame then collapse the legs around the frame then decide how long to make the rungs. This would guarentee that both sets of legs would collapse around the frame for easy fold up.
